250 GTO
When the 250 GTO was launched in 1962, it cost $18,000 in the United States. Furthermore, the personal approval of Enzo Ferrari—the company's founder and director—was required before a purchase could be made.[citation needed] Thirty-six cars were produced in 1962 and 1963. A second series was unveiled in 1964; it featured only minor cosmetic changes compared to the original. Only three units of this second version were built, while four original cars were converted to the newer model. Today, the car represents the absolute pinnacle of the automotive market, with astronomical sales figures reaching up to $51.7 million at public auctions.
